St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Francesco Forgione was born in Pietrelcina, a southern Italian town on May 25 1887.  His parents were simple farming people with a deep sense of faith and a strong commitment to family.  Francesco studied under a private tutor until his father went to America to earn the money to send Francesco to a real school.  At the age of 15 he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars and took the name Pio.  He was ordained a priest on August 10, 1910 and assigned to the friary of San Giovanni Rotondo where he remained until his death.

In 1918 stigmata, the five wounds that Christ bore during his passion appeared on Padre Pio's body.  Padre Pio is the only priest to have received stigmata.

His life was one of dedication to God.  Though he suffered from health problems all his life, he was of strong will and with the help of grace he carried out his vocation with humility and compassion.  He prayed many hours each day.  During WWII he would hear confessions hour upon hour.  American soldiers who returned home would share their stories and soon pilgrimages to visit Padre Pio began.  The faithful would come seeking the council and spiritual guidance of Padre Pio.  Due to his efforts and prayers a much needed hospital, the Home for the Relief of Suffering was build in San Giovanni Rotondo in 1956.

In September 1968 Padre Pio thanked his guardian angel for having been at his side all of his life.  As his health deteriorated and he became weaker, Padre Pio requested that his confession be heard, and then he renewed the vows that he made to God.  On September 23, 1968 he died.  To the astonishment of those who surrounded him, the stigmata which he bore for much of his life were gone.  The suffering which he had endured was over; he had entered a new life with God.  Padre Pio's love and faith remain in the world today.  Many pray to him to intercede with God on their behalf.  Miracles have been attributed to him.  Pope John Paul II remarked that Saint Pio's remarkable spirituality and suffering are a valuable model for our modern times.
